Sunday Puppy Blues

Wicket puppy boy is in his new “punishment place” — the downstairs bathtub with the light off and the door closed. He hates it and is barking up a storm. We just can't seem to get these puppies house broken. It's awful. We are resorting to slightly torturous methods in an attempt to keep our newly carpets fresh- hence the bathtub “jail.” The two pups are inseperable and no amount of “normal” punishment is working, so (sigh) seperation it is.
Poor Wicket puppy… bathtubs are so cold and lonely— especially in the dark. I'm crossing my fingers he'll get the message and STOP pooping on the carpet.
There's a moment of silence… I better go make sure he's okay…

Sounds to me like the parents need the training not the dogs. Punishment never works. Reward always works.

Dogs do not connect the punishment with the crime. All you are going to accomplish is to produce neurotic dogs. As mentioned, punishment does not work. Only reward.

I agree with the other comments. There are plenty of books & probably websites too that tell you how to housebreak your puppies without punishing them for their “mistakes”.

I agree with the others. We just got a new puppy and read the training books that we checked out for free at our local public library. The training books state that if you do not discipline within 10 seconds of the accident, the animal has no idea what they are being punished for. You are supposed to take them out every two hours for about the first three to four weeks to get them trained and even then they will still have accidents.

i read somewhere that pups don't remember 10 seconds after what they did to deserve the punishment. if you can't do it in the first seconds they after they did it, then there's no real point.
