Why is the content of John Mark Karrs’ stomach newsworthy?

I think if I hear what John Mark Karr ate for dinner on his flight from Thailand one more time, I’ll throw up.

While he was enroute to LAX from Bangkok I happened to be in LA. Since hotel TV is limited I tended to leave my television on news channels while in a hotel - for background noise. I was really surprised at the constant “coverage” of his in flight meal. Countless times I heard what he ate in an astonished voice via one newscaster or another. Then as if that weren’t enough - the stations started bringing in lawyers and analysts to talk about what he ate and whether or not it was appropriate.

All that kept rolling through my mind was how expensive it is to get TV time and why were they squandering it on the current contents of his stomach.

What about Jon Benet the innocent child who was murdered? Shouldn’t that time be spent on talking about the holes in the case? Or at the least talking about the known facts? This is haunting me. Television news sank to an all time low after this incident, in my opinion.

I just don’t see how what a suspects dinner included should be considered primetime news worthy.

What do you think?

[...] Ponzi’s returned from her hiatus, it seems - aided by a desktop publishing tool (no, not Windows Live Writer - which I believe is still at the “barely noteworthy” stage). She’s really upset about this whole John Mark Karr situation - not because of what he may have done, but because of the way the media is covering what he had for dinner on the plane. Even if Karr didn’t kill Jonbenet, he’s still a dickwad - and the media are even bigger dickwads for spending so much time talking about this dickwad. [...]

Then there’s this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/defekto/77714023/in/set-1105736/
My Flickr friend, Defekto (aka Jim Lucio) has a velvet portrait of Jon Benet in his living room which was featured on CourtTv. (I could’nt get the URL, but it is featured in the Case in Pictures section)

I personally don’t think JMK killed JBR; I think he is just a “15 minutes of fame wacko”. In any event, I couldn’t care less what he eats on his flight into infamy. (Another reason why I opt for a good book over television any day)

Welcome back, btw.

Hi Ponzi, I think I know how you feel. I also can’t listen to it.

Ponzi- You might be interested in CounterSpin, a weekly radio show that dissects the previous week’s news (as much as they can cover in a half hour). I don’t know if they specifically cover this story, but it can be damned interesting.

Me, I’m up in arms because NPR Morning Edition let one of the border Militia people state that it’s a health hazard that illegal immigrants work in food service industry, since they (paraphrasing him) come from 3rd world countries and haven’t even had vaccinations and don’t have good hygiene. The interviewer didn’t challenge any of his assertions.

Yeah, the media sux.

Ponzi, here’s my take on the Karr furor.

A Henry And Mr. Bones Elegy For JonBenet

Dan Abrams murdered JonBenet.
No, Rita Cosby murdered the little princess.
No, CourtTV murdered JonBenet.

Bill O’Reilly sexually assaulted her
and then strangled her.
Ann Coulter sexually assaulted her

and then blamed the liberals.
Nancy Grace sexually assaulted JonBenet
and then strangled her.

Anderson Cooper and Sheppard Smith
both of them took turns sexually assaulting her
and slowly strangling her.

All these bastards and bitches
are going to jail.
Who’s going to deliver the news now?

Nice to see you back, Ponzi! I rarely watch TV news because it’s become a visualization of the supermarket tabloid magazines. I have no interest in the purported killer of JonBenet and I agree with Julius that he probably didn’t do it. TV news has to compete with cable, websites & blogosphere, so any little tidbit of info is news: the fact that Karr traveled in business class was “news”. Having champagne with his dinner was “news”. No wonder so many people get their info from websites & blogs. And some of even read newspapers!
