Furniture Shopping with Dave Winer

My friend Dave emailed a couple weeks ago to tell me he had closed on a beautiful new house in CA. He said “I need help decorating and furnishing it.” Of course I said “I’ll be happy to help you do it.” (In case you didn’t know – I love to decorate and I love to shop. – Disco!)

I’ve spent the past two days with a computer genius, his credit card and a house so big it echoes when you speak.

We had a great time. I’ve spent the last hour and a half “processing.” The conversation was the kind you hope for and sometimes need but never “see” when it’s coming. I learned that Dave is a quick study and an eager student as well as a great teacher. It was fun teaching him what little I know. I watched his reaction to new thought patterns and saw it pleased him as much as it did me. :)

In the beginning the conversation went something like this.

Me: “Dave, what do you think of this sofa for the den? It has red in it, I think it would pop next to go your accent wall.”

Him: “I have an accent wall? What accent wall? A red wall, are you sure.”

Forty eight hours later we are sitting in a furniture warehouse and he says

“This couch isn’t structured it won’t work for that space.”

The conversation in between the furniture buying was priceless. We talked about the politics behind RSS, family, the philosophy of Buddhism, the fact that mixing patterns with stripes is really – okay, heart disease, health in the thirties verses health in the fifties, orange is a power color in the right shade, how people judge you by what they see you surround yourself with and my favorite – his brief affiliation with Joan Baez. lol – Don’t ask I won’t tell!

I had a wonderful time helping my friend decorate and more importantly I liked getting to know him betters. Since we didn’t finish with the decorating I’m sure I’ll be back for another session of laughs, decorating and fun.

Now I’m off to see my honey in Seattle. I sure missed Chris like crazy while I was gone! He blogged about Wicket and Pixie getting their own blogs while I was gone. It made me miss them even more.
