The best kind of new love is the kind that gives you a tingle because it’s a bit naughty. There’s something so yummy and fresh- yet… just a little naughty about a web 2.0 tool I’m falling for called Twitter. I’ve been twitting on the twitter site for just a week or so. It’s not a new site – I’m just new to it. It’s silly and fun. Go try it and see if you agree.
What the heck is it? It’s a site that asks simply ”What are you doing?” Why do I like it you ask… because it’s genius. It reminds me of a site that asked ”What do you want to search for?” and made us all fall in love with it?
Mostly I love it because it’s cathartic and offers immediate reward. Smart, very smart. Make me feel good some more. I like it. No more guilt about not blogging everyday when I’ve twittered. It somehow lets me feel like I’m in the loop. Not the big picture loop, I know, but the small loop of friends I’ve created -my little loop.
Some people say it’s a time waster. Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t. Here’s my example of why I like it better than blogging… for the moment.
I blogged about a product by the name of mypunchbowl ,over a month ago. When I blogged about it I had a free half hour – 45 minutes to review and write my thoughts.
I’ve been on overdrive since that post- with travel, remodeling of the house and the usual thirteen business deals. So… I haven’t posted a follow up. I’ve received a few emails in response to it. Friends had blogged; I found there was a mini drama about me mistakenly giving out email addresses for newsletters/advertising. (I heard this through my verbal grapevine rather than my written one.) Oh boy… so in the evening after my work was done, the contractors had left and my body was tired from the days happenings I’d think “Oh – I need to blog – update- about the punchbowl thing. Then I’d think- but I’m tired. I’ll do it tomorrow, I need to research the conversation and it’s going to take some time.
Guilt from not blogging. Especially once I was told the creators had heard what we were all saying and made the efforts to change to what “the people” where hollering about. More guilt.
With Twitter there is no guilt. I twit in the airport while I’m waiting on my bags. I read some twits while I wait in line. I feel good because I’ve communicated something to my friends online and I didn’t take two hours to do it. With twitter there’s no time or space to pontificate. I must admit liking that. It’s simple and easy and there’s not a lot of room for undo drama. Just fun little inane real time conversation that I can’t typically have with friends in different parts of the world. Some days I sort of like knowing what lunch my friend picked. I got a new idea for lunch yesterday as a matter of fact.
I’m sure as my days fill again I’ll tire of it but for now, it’s new and I like it – alot.
This weekend I’ll be in Orange County, CA . Who knows maybe I’ll twitter a quick meet up and see if anyone wants to hang out!

no guilt for twittering. I agree. But I get a tiny twinge of guilt for not twittering. Much smaller than the big guilt for not blogging, but guilt nonetheless.
On the other hand, when I twitter or blog, there’s the guilt of not doing my real work.

This is exactly why I love twitter. I haven’t followed all the drama over why people do and don’t like it. All I know is, I like it, and you articulated why. :)

Micheal, maybe I haven’t gotten to your level of twittering yet. :) It’s still shiny and new, no guilt.
Dave – I did do it. Unfortunately I’m not the natural writer you are and it took way too much of my time today to write this post.
Jen – Soul sista, I knew there were more than a few of us out there.
Thanks ya’ll for posting comments!

I have been using Twitter for about a week an a half. It is kind of fun getting up every morning to see what people have been tweetering about.
It is pretty cool.

Resistance is futile, I guess. I tried not to get into it, but now I have two Twitter friends- DOH!

Thanks for the twitter add. I agree about twitter vs. traditional blogging. In fact, I’ve abandoned trying to write a traditional blog and simply stuck a twitter badge on my “blog” page.
One surreal aspect of twitter–I’m seeing people I recognize from other online communities (e.g., MySpace) as friends or friends-of-friends. It’s a small (Web 2.0) world after all…
